Description
John Huston Finley, Knox College class of 1887, joined with other local bibliophiles to form the Cadmus Society, which met in a corner of a Galesburg bookshop to discuss books and to plan their own publications. The purpose of the club, according to an article written by Earnest Elmo Calkins in Print magazine, was "... to publish books of local origin that would not otherwise get into print." Other Cadmus Society regulars listed in the very fine print in this bookplate designed by Finley include Earnest Calkins, George Appleton Lawrence, Philip Sidney Post, William Simonds, Edgar Bancroft, and Carl Sandburg mentor Philip Greene Wright. The Cadmus Press published its final volume in 1909.
